Newchurch-in-Pendle and Spring!

A bit of a "photo-fest" today - everything was so wonderful!

St Mary's, Newchurch-in-Pendle. A chapel of ease is recorded on the site in 1250. In 1544 a later chapel was dedicated here by the Bishop of Chester - the Chester diocese covered much of the north-west at that time. On the west face of the tower is a carving which resembles a filled-in window above which is a dripstone. This is said to resemble the all-seeing "Eye of God".

The Nutter headstone probably dates from 1694. It is possible that the members of the family inscribed on this headstone were relatives of Alice Nutter, one of the women accused in the Pendle witch trials.

Pendle from Pendleton Village

Pendleton - just two miles to the south east of Clitheroe, this lovely village is divided by a small stream coming off the slopes of Pendle. The village is a conservation areaand has at least one listed building. In 1969 a Bronze Age urn was discovered at Pendleton and is now on display at the Clitheroe Castle Museum.

Fiddle Bridge - this ancient bridge was returned to the village from the nearby Standen Hall, owned by the Aspinall family who also own the village

The Swan with Two Necks Pub - it's thought that the name arrives from the swan marks used by the Vintners Company as far back as the 15th century

A visit to Gawthorpe Hall in Padiham this morning. This magnificent 17th century country house rests in a beautiful riverside setting amongst woodlands and landscaped gardens. It was the family home of the Shuttleworths for over 300 years. Although still showing original features such as plasterwork ceilings and oak panelling, Sir Charles Barry, renowned architect of the Houses of Parliament, was employed to remodel the interior in the 19th century. The house now displays grand period rooms reflecting the lifestyle of an aristocratic Victorian family and the nationally important Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth textile collection which includes stunning examples of needlework and costume. A famous figure who stayed at the Hall was Charlotte Bronte.

How much history there is in place-names, and how fascinating they can be. We passed Portfield Bar today, which, other than guessing used to be a toll, we know nothing about. We know a bit more about Slaidburn - the name Slaidburn originally applied to the stream, now known as the Croasdale Brook, which bounds the settlement to the north. It is derived from the Old English slaeget or sleget meaning ‘a sheep pasture’ and burna meaning ‘a stream,’ and translates as ‘the stream by the sheep pasture’ (Smith 1961, 204).

Clitheroe Royal Grammar School

It was founded in 1554 as "The Free Grammar School of King Philip and Queen Mary" “for the education, instruction and learning of boys and young men in grammar; to be and to continue for ever.”

After 44 years of sharing the school buildings with the boys, the newly-built Girls Grammar School opened in 1958 and amalgamated with the Boys Grammar School in 1985. CRGS celebrated its 450th anniversary in 2004, an event marked by the planting of a tree by HRH The Duke of York.

Weather today - still snow on the ground this morning, but a rapid thaw in warm(!) sunshine, then grey and damp in the afternoon. Thick fog at Kenibus in the evening.

Thought for the day:
Sometimes the mind is completely blank;
Occasionally its good to be so,
Today it was just....blankness!

Here Comes the Snow - AGAIN! Weather today - minus 6 degrees overnight, everything frozen, then 3 inches of snow in an hour at about 5pm.

Thought for the day:
I love Bowland, in all its moods, snow, rain, wind, whatever,
But occasionally I long for a beach, blue sea, and scorching sun!

Busy all day hospital visiting, so no images from today, sorry. Here is a reprise of the past few weeks instead.

Thought for the day:
We all need a little routine, a smidgeon of the normal, most things commonplace and known,
With here and there the challenge of the new and the different to add spice.
But too much of either, and we are lost and afraid.

How strange that inanimate objects can harbour so much emotion.
Mum's 52 year old solid fuel AGA (known always as Annie AGA)went out today for the last time - it's being converted to gas.
It has been the warmth and the heart of our family home for all my life, and all of us love it like a dear friend.
